Understanding Fractions: A Comprehensive Guide

What Are Fractions?

Fractions represent parts of a whole. They consist of two numbers separated by a slash:

numerator denominator

The numerator (top number) shows how many parts we have, while the denominator (bottom number) shows how many equal parts the whole is divided into.

Types of Fractions

  • Proper fractions: Numerator is smaller than denominator (e.g., 3/4)
  • Improper fractions: Numerator is equal to or larger than denominator (e.g., 5/4)
  • Mixed numbers: Combination of a whole number and a proper fraction (e.g., 1 1/4)

Fraction Operations Explained

Adding Fractions

To add fractions, they must have the same denominator. If they don't, find a common denominator first.

Example: 1/4 + 2/3 = (1×3)/(4×3) + (2×4)/(3×4) = 3/12 + 8/12 = 11/12

Subtracting Fractions

Similar to addition, fractions need a common denominator for subtraction.

Example: 3/4 - 1/6 = (3×3)/(4×3) - (1×2)/(6×2) = 9/12 - 2/12 = 7/12

Multiplying Fractions

Multiply numerators together and denominators together.

Example: 2/3 × 3/5 = (2×3)/(3×5) = 6/15 = 2/5 (simplified)

Dividing Fractions

Multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second fraction.

Example: 3/4 ÷ 2/5 = 3/4 × 5/2 = 15/8 = 1 7/8

Simplifying Fractions

Reduce fractions to their simplest form by dividing numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD).

Example: 8/12 simplifies to 2/3 (both divided by 4)

Converting Between Fractions and Decimals

Fraction to Decimal: Divide numerator by denominator (e.g., 3/4 = 0.75)

Decimal to Fraction: Write decimal as fraction with denominator 10, 100, etc., then simplify (e.g., 0.125 = 125/1000 = 1/8)
